Department of Public Health Dentistry

I. PROGRAMME ATTENDED:

Dr.K.R.Lenin, Associate Professor
• Performed as RRC coordinator of our institution and involved our students in the intercollegiate competition programmes (Red Run, Drama & Reel making for HIV/AIDS awareness) organised by Pondicherry AIDS Control Society. Student interactive programmes within the institution were also conducted for 3rd & 4th year students. An integrated health testing camp (Blood sugar, HIV, Syphilis) for Staff and Students was also conducted in the institution with the support of PACS on 23/03/2024.
• Performed as NSS programme officer of our institution and participated in various outreach and awareness programmes on societal significance with our student volunteers. They participated much actively in the State level NSS Mega camp 2024 held from 12th to 18th March 2024 organised under the direction of PuducherryState NSS cell.

II. HEALTH PROMOTION ACTIVITIES:

Oral Health Education has given to 718 male; 663 female, Tobacco Cessation Counselling has given to 702 male ; 46 female, out of which 27 male and 3 female were quoted from tobacco.

III. DENTAL CAMPS:

1. On 20/04/2023 at NCC Complex, Lawspet 137 male and 53 female were treated.
2. On 11/05/2023 at NCC Complex, Lawspet 87 male and 68 female were treated.
3. On 12/05/2023 at Central Prison, Kalapet 53 male were treated.
4. On 31/05/2024 at Schedule tribe colony, Karuvadikuppam 26 male and 21 female were treated.
5. On 14/07/2023 at Central prison, Kalapet 54 male and 3 female were treated.
6. 15/09/2023 at Central prison, Kalapet 65 male and 1 female were treated.

DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AT SATELLITE DENTAL CLINIC (SEDARAPET):

In the clinic around 474 male and 389 female were screened out of which 191 male and 158 female were treated, the remaining patients were referred to mgpgids hospital.

IV. DENTAL CAMPS IN ASSOCIATION WITH NOHP:

• Dental camp was organised by NOHP from 2.5.23 to 4.5.23 in the Mega Health Festival held at Kamarajar Manimandapam, Karuvadikkuppam, Puducherry. The CRRIs of deptt. of Public Health Dentistry participated and provided dental health care services for the general public who visited the Mega Health Festival. A total of 449 (M = 253; F = 196) members were benefitted by the camp.
• Dental camp for the employees of India Nippon electricals ltd, Kariamanikkam, Puducherry was organised by NOHP on 20.01.2024 at their premises. The CRRIs of deptt. of Public Health Dentistry participated and provided dental health care services. A total of 322 (M = 168; F = 154) employees were benefitted by the camp.

VI . SPECIAL AWARENESS PROGRAMMES:

A. National Oral Cancer Awareness Rally:

In observance of National Oral Cancer Day, a rally was organised by Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Puducherry on 14.10.2023. The CRRIs from the deptt. of Public Health Dentistry participated in the rally along with the postgraduate students (deptt. of Oral Pathology, MGPGIDS) and raised awareness about oral cancer among the general public of Puducherry.
World Oral Health Day Programme:

It was observed in the deptt. of Public Health Dentistry from 20.03.2024 to 22.03.2024 between 8.00 am and 12.30 pm aimed at spreading awareness on oral health with special focus on paediatric patients. A total of 103 (M = 52; F = 51) members were benefitted. The CRRIs and III BDS students delivered oral health education and demonstrated
“tooth brushing technique” and “hand washing technique” to all the participants. Free samples of tooth brush & tooth paste were issued to all the children.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES:

• The CRRIs & III BDS (supplementary batch) students provided the 3D model to the department for delivering oral health education effectively. The models are effective in explaining the various treatment modalities available for dental caries management The III year BDS students prepared health education posters (6 feet x 3 feet) on topic of consequences of tooth loss & the need for replacement.
• The CRRIs and students participated in World No Tobacco Day competitions organised by IAPHD – TN chapter for the year 2023 and secured 1st & 3rd places in Poem writing (A.Nivaditha, K.Srimathi), 2nd place in slogan writing (S.Sushmitha) and 2nd & 3rd places in Meme creation (M.Mubeena, N.Kamalakannan).

VIII. PUBLICATION:

• Published an article titled “Periodontal status and oral mucosal lesions among smokeless tobacco users in small scale industries of Chennai – A cross sectional study” in the Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in the year 2023; Volume 27; Issue 2; Page 942-950.

Admission

B.D.S. Course: 125 Students are admitted from this year to the B.D.S. course, of which 51 are from the Union Territory of Puducherry. The admissions to these seats are made on UG NEET merit basis by the CENTAC, Pondicherry.
M.D.S. Course : 19 Students are admitted from this year to M.D.S. courses, of which 50% seats from the UT of Puducherry. The admission to these seats are made on NEET-MDS merit basis by the CENTAC, Pondicherry.
